Each week a product is reviewed on this site. Either it’s one that we’ve bought, been sent, or one of our own that has been reviewed by a customer.
This week I chose to review Pure Nature's Lavender essential oil. I have used this essential oil in soap making several times, and it’s the one I’m currently using to make the soap and essential oil blend for sale on this website, so I know it's excellent in soap. But is it good as a home cleaner? I had never used it in my home cleaning products before and was curious to see how it went.
I keep my cleaning products simple - vinegar for just about everything, with added baking soda for things that need a bit of extra elbow grease. A drop of Lemon essential oil at the most. During a winter-long renovation our house was covered with a large structure of encapsulated scaffolding to the west which meant, despite daily airing, one downstairs room in particular became damp. There was mould around the external doorway and the paint at the top of the door frame bubbled. I cleaned the offending mould with vinegar and the paint mysteriously went back to normal the week after the scaffolding came off, but I noticed the rooms nearby had started to get moldy build ups around the edges of the windows. Not ideal, especially with two children in the house.
This was the perfect test for my Pure Nature lavender essential oil. Would I be able to get rid of the musty corners and keep them gone during our wet Wellington spring with only a regular weekly wipe? Lavender essential oil is an excellent choice if you are looking for something to give a boost to your usual cleaner as it is a natural antibiotic and antiseptic. Usually vinegar by itself would have been OK, but because of the months under plastic my house was in danger of developing a mould problem and I wanted to give it an extra boost.
I filled my usual spray bottle with vinegar and added two drops of oil. Two drops is heaps if you have a good quality oil.
I sprayed the mixture into the corner of each window in the house and wiped it away with a damp cloth. Everything looked clean. A week later, after pointedly ignoring the windows (I love it when ignoring housework is part of a product test), I went back to check and found a little mustiness in some corners, but overall there was an improvement. What hadn’t improved was the weather - heaps of rain with slightly warmer temperatures, perfect mould growing conditions. I kept this up all through September and now I have a mould free house again. It’s October and I’m confident I won't have to worry about mould again.
Pure Nature lavender essential oil gets a 4.5 out of 5 from me. I took half a mark off because by the end of the month I was well and truly over the smell of lavender. I’m happy to be back using just vinegar, baking soda and open windows again. My house is once again mould free.
"Hopi soap is such a treat to use. It smells devine, yet it's gentle enough to use on little ones with sensitive skin too. I love it so much that I gave it to all of my clients as a special Christmas gift. Can't get enough!"
"Using Hopi soap for my family means I can be assured that they are getting clean with natural ingredients which are gentle on their skin and lovely fragrances."
"I LOVE them. They are my favourite."
